A deep and moody affair from one of my favorite
vocalists, Clara Hill. She's worked with Atjazz on a few remixes.
But, what touches my soul is the video. Murakami's Japan. Connect
the visual with the music and see what you get out of it.
Two icons, one vision. In 1945, John Entenza
organized what was to be one of the most revolutionary periods in
the history of Modern Architecture. Arts and Architecture magazine's
Case Study House Program was launched to bring forth the vision
and aim to introduce new building technology and architectural language
to the masses through a series of slick and streamlined homes being
sprinkled all over Southern California. The result was the construction
of 28 houses of steel that eventually became icons and testaments
to the arrival of a new era in Architecture and the ultimate achievement
of modern living. Pictured here, perched up on Wonderland, is one
of my favorite models by the architect Pierre Koenig and was dubbed
Case Study House #21. I have copies of the plans in my archives
courtesy of the architect himself if anyone cares to examine them.
The other icon of course is the sexy 356 in the carport.
The MiniMoog synth sound made it's way into
a lot of the earlier electronic acts and can still be heard today
in almost all R&B, Soul, Hip-Hop and House music. I want one.
R2
Records has once again proved to be an authority on releasing quality
soulful electronic music. With some of the finest global artists
and producers on their roster (Atjazz, Osunlade, Kissey Asplund,
Louie Vega to name a few), the label has set the bar for others
who wish to put out a unique collection of deep house, soul, and
electronic music for the discerning listener. In the spirit of the
vocalist/producer collaborative team (EBTG, Inner City), MAHON is
R2's latest creative muse made up of Irish vocalist Fiona Mahon
and New York producer Trevor Goodchilde. House, disco and soul inspired
grooves coupled with Fiona Mahon's soulful vocals remind us of how
timeless music should always sound and reverberate through time
and space. Human,
the first EP from the duo is testament to this notion. "Closer"
is a west coast sounding deep house experience with two excellent
remixes from KARIZMA that is sure to be a dancefloor favorite. "Human"
is a track that helps define Mahon's sound: natural, organic but
still 100% danceable. The rest of the EP stays true to their definitive
sound which also includes a remake of a Lou Rawls classic "You'll
Never Find Another Love". Be on the lookout for one of these
tracks in future Soulful
Living shows. Human is out now digitally on Juno
Download and Amazon.
Check the video to get to know Mahon.
Here's a great interview with New York house
legend Danny Krivit from the RBMA archives. It's been exactly a
year since I had the honor of opening up for Danny at Candelas and
I still hear echoes of that magical night. Enjoy.

Great interview with deep house legend Larry
Heard whose music I am into at the moment. Dropped some of his classic
tracks at two gigs this past weekend. Look out for them in upcoming
sessions.
This Friday July 16th is Strictly Vinyl Night
at Candelas Lounge. This means house classics, disco, soul and nothing
but WAX!

Recent trips to my previously adopted City
of Angels with the Mrs. reminded me of how much I miss always being
around this city and made me wonder why I even left. A reunion of
sorts in the works perhaps? This is a photo of The Griffith Observatory
with the LA skyline hidden behind the haze (and no, that ain't smog!).
This Thursday July
1st, yours truly will be a guest DJ at my good friend Mannix Rodriguez's
weekly house music internet radio show called Live & Direct
on WORLDTUNEDRADIO.COM where I'll be playing a live set from 8-10:30
pm. Looking forward to this one so be sure to tune in.
A loft party, pool
party, and a possible house dance competition. Not a bad schedule
for the summer. Looking forward to dropping some beats. Check in
for updates.
I am pleased to
finally present the Soulful Living Guest Mix series. As always,
I created Soulful Living as a platform to share with the global
music community some of the best house music, DJs, and artists that
are doing their thing and doing it proper. Along with my regular
deep house sessions, I will be showcasing guest mixes from DJs who
are making a difference. In keeping with the eclectic spirit of
the show, the series will focus on a broader range of musical genres.
The first of the series is a downtempo, funk, disco, and house mix
by DEEP-LA's own JOPLIN. I have had the opportunity to experience
a set from her as well as open up for her at DIVE's 2010 New Year's
Eve party and believe me she knows how to own a crowd. Better check
her out. Go to the Guest
Mix Page to take a listen and be sure
to stay connected to hear about future guests.
This past Friday SOLE CHANNEL label mates MR.V and Will "Reelsoul"
Rodriguez shook up our little corner of San Diego with solid DJ
sets that will burn in my memory for a while. Reelsoul's opening
set was deep and edgy, just enough to fill up the floor earlier
than usual. By midnight, the venue was absolutely filled to capacity
as MR. V got ready to bring it NYC style. Both DJs mixed up the
evening with new music, definitive house classics, and a dose of
disco and 80s for good measure. San Diego house music supporters,
dancers, and all our HABITAT friends came out in force for Henry
Diaz's and my good friend Elizabeth's birthdays and for what ended
up to be a magical evening. Shouts to the DIVE fam DJ ALA, Mikeytown,
and Will for stopping by. A million thanks to all who came out.
This had to have been the peak of Mr. V's
set.
Mr. V ended the night with this classic. I
never would have thought to play this joint but it absolutely energized
the crowd and to my surprise, the whole club new the words to the
song. We actually talked about it until we finally got kicked out
of the club. It was that moving. Such a humbling experience
to see a community come together for the love of music.
SOLE CHANNEL label mates MR.V and Will "Reelsoul" Rodriguez
will be in full strength at the HABITAT digs this Friday, May 14th
for an evening of amazing soulful house music. We are extremely
excited to have these two renowned DJs and producers from both coasts
together in our home to share with us what they do best which is
to throw down some serious Sole Channel heat. We are also celebrating
Henry Diaz's big birthday bash so I expect to see the heads deep
in the place. Candelas 420 3rd Avenue, San Diego.
I just had to share with you one of the most beautiful deep house
joints out now. Superman by Black Coffee with haunting vocals
by Bucie. Better believe this will stay in my bag for a while.
This track has been such a hit on the dancefloor and I am looking
forward to more music from our friends in South Africa. Don't
forget to show your support by purchasing the music you hear on
Soulful Living.
Friday is CLASSICS night at Habitat. I'm
Celebrating my birthday along with my good friend Shey at Candelas
this Friday 4/30. We're diggin deep in the vaults for some disco
and house classics for all to enjoy and reminisce in the true
spirit of house music. Save the date for the SOLE CHANNEL PARTY
May 14th. Candelas 420 3rd Avenue.
